This is a tribute to my 2nd most favourite disco,Rush Dance Club.
For the uninitiated,Rush is located on the now-quiet,once-happening Mohd Sultan Road.Right opposite the Bak Kut Teh shop. The genre of music played: Eurodance. More popular known as techno. Not many a level students or graduates congregate at this club but of course there is the rare few who really knows how to appreciate such pulsating dance music. Considered to be a relative newcomer in the techno clubs scene as compared to now defunct clubs like Club 3,Club 7 and Sparks. Also widely known as a club with backing from the secret society gang number 18.
So,why the sudden tribute to Rush?
The urge to write this tribute comes after a night where George,Lum Kor and Ti Kor sped down to Sultan from their own homes at Initial D-esque speeds, trying to get to Dbl O before 10,with the misconception that our silver SAFRA card could have got us into the club free of charge. As a result, the SAF let us down, yet again.Guess what, the promotion has ended last month. Maybe it's my fate with the SAF,we really are ba zi bu he.
Ok,so as we were walking away from Dbl O disappointed,we were thinking that maybe on a Thursday night, there may not be a need to pay cover charge to enter Rush. However,as we approached Rush,I found that it is not open. The first thought that crossed my mind was that Rush is not open on Thursday. As i walked closer,I found a note sticked onto the front door, with the words "The Last Dance" emboldened on that piece of paper. As this moment, fear starts to knock at the door of my heart. As i continue reading the note,my heart starts to sink deeper and deeper into the abyss of depression.
Rush is closing after 30th September.Which is conspiciouly also the day where we were planning to go since weeks ago to celebrate Andrew Li Weiqi's birthday. And on that night,Rush will be spinning for the last night.
As the thought starts to sink in,a wild torrent of emotions hit me straight into the face suddenly.Rush is closing down.
This story actually dates back to years ago, where Rush is 1 of the very few clubs along the Sultan stretch whereby it is not filled with black Indians. As a result,me and my friends, staring at a lack of choices, decided to go in to take a look. What we found is a heaven of electrifying Eurodance music, where unlike mainstream clubs like Zouk or Chinablack during those times, the people in Rush are genuinely enjoying their music instead of trying to look good or looking around to pick up chicks.Albeit there are times where high emotions rears its ugly side in terms of violence,I would rather be in such a club where people are less pretentious. Also, there are not many places in boring Singapore where you can see 20 or more people engaging in a mass brawl.:) As the techno music plays, the shouts of the various gang poems resonate with such melodious charm, you can't help but think that although these guys are less educated, they definitely have some sort of musical talent hidden within them.
Hai...so 30th Sept,on a night where there is supposed to be celebrations and happiness all round, celebrating Weiqi's birthday,I'm sure there will definitely be more than a tinge of sadness within all of us too, where we know that this is the last night where we can enjoy ourselves at this place where so much memories, puke and blood have been shed.
I urge everybody, even those who have never been to techno clubs or have the misconception that these clubs are boring,to just come down on 30th September, enjoy it or just experience it for the final time,as there will not be any such opportunities in future.
To all those people who frequent this club,it's time to leave our differences aside.Be it you are from AST,KT or 18. If you really just want to fight just for old time's sake, let's make it a good 1 this time.
To Rush Dance Club,I will make The Last Dance the Best 1 too. Thanks for the memories.
